about.
I created the video elements of Un Nuevo Camino, an art installation by Mark 'Kidnetick' Rivera, an honorarium-awarded Burning Man artist from Puerto Rico. As ICE immigration raids started making headlines, the piece evolved to be a bold statement about the plight of refugees.
Collaborating with the artist to tell this story, I made video that ran in the astronauts' helmet visors. I incorporated traditional Puerto Rican art motifs in the mother's facial tattoos, and produced a narrative arc for the displaced space travelers. For this project, character consistency was a consideration. But the video was shown via an LED spinner inside the astronauts' helmets, not on a high res screen. Conveying the characters' story in a short, dialogue free video was the primary goal.
Seeing people get their phones out at Burning Man to video the video that you made was deeply rewarding experience.
The piece was later exhibited at the Burning Man Decompression event in Oakland, and I was able to update the helmet video, incorporating both Mark Rivera's evolving concept for the storyline and my own learnings around what's possible in the format.
